There isn't a generic way to do it as it's not a part of the FTP or SFTP protocols, but some servers have custom commands that allow you to do it. Which server are you using?

That isn't enough information. I need to know what type of FTP server the Linux box is running. For example, is it ProFTPD, PureFTPD, VSFTPD....?
