Internet Explorer is not a very good FTP client, but it can be used with CompleteFTP if you take the following into account:
  1. Authentication: It doesn't automatically prompt the user for a user-name and password when it fails to connect anonymously. You have two options:
    1. include the user-name/password in the URL, e.g. ftp://user:pass@hostname/directory
    2. connect anonymously (i.e. without user-name/password) and then manually bring up the login dialog. Internet Explorer itself no longer allows FTP logins, instead you have to open up the site in Windows Explorer. You can do this by selecting "View this site in Windows Explorer" from the View menu. If the menu is not visible then tap Alt once to show it. Once you're in Windows Explorer, select "Login as..." from the File menu.
  2. Home directory: Once it has authenticated it tries to change into the literal directory that's in the URL. Again you have two options:
    1. include the full path of the home directory in the URL
    2. configure the server to have the user's home directory appear as their root directory. In CompleteFTP this is done by checking "User's home folder appears as root" in the General User Settings.
