Doers anyone know if theres a way to query the remote server to see if it supports Z mode?

Normally if you send the FEAT command you should get MODE Z in the reply if MODE Z is supported.

By the way, I think you mentioned that getting the listings for a large directory was really slow. Enabling compression can speed up directory listings hugely.

Of course none of the servers we deal with support Z Mode. Most are IIS6 boxes.
