this is a new install with a demo license.... when I attempt to connect I get the following error "530 Login incorrect"

from the log files i see user not found.   But i have a non windows user with the user name user.

2018-08-03 07:53:34,989 WARN [Session.41:Default Site:user?:] User user not found 

any ideas?

Can you enable debug logging and send the relevant part of the log file? It may be that the user's home directory is invalid, which could prevent logging in.

turned display level to debug this is what i see
Opened connection for realtime logging
Logging level set to Debug
TimeoutLogin: Login-44
Must be logged in to execute command OPTS
User user not found
Login failed: no user (Remote IP=)
TimeoutLogin: Login-46

Please ensure the server logging level is set to Debug under the "Log Files" tab and repeat the login attempt. Then open a new ticket in our support system and send us the zipped log file, which you can find at C:\ProgramData\Enterprise Distributed Technologies\Complete FTP\Logs\diagnostics.log.

For the information of readers, this issue was because the "Apply changes" button in the CompleteFTP manager had not been selected after adding the user. This meant the user had not yet been added to the configuration.
